ANTHONY DONOVAN is a singer-songwriter based in London, playing acoustic guitar, harmonica, and piano. His new album “ Irreligious Poetry “, as with the previous “A Life in Alphabetical Order”, contains songs in which his poetic lyrics and melodic acoustics suggest influences of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon or Van Morrison.
“I began writing songs in Dover where I was brought up and went to School. At age 23 I moved up to London where I believed I’d have opportunity of meeting other musicians and gaining professional experience in the music business. Being able to play piano, guitar, and harmonica, I initially found work as a pianist in Covent Garden restaurants.”
This led eventually to forming his own Jazz Quartet “Venus Edge” as pianist-composer, and to performing regularly at venues like the National Theatre, and Waldorf Hotel. Two albums of his jazz compositions were released on the prominent British Jazz record label “33 Records”, but Anthony was missing the sound of guitars and his first love, of song-writing.
Continuing for a while to work with the rhythm section from the Jazz Quartet, the Band secured a regular stint at the Troubadour Folk Club through 2015 to 2017, before cutting Anthony’s first song album, “A Life in Alphabetical Order”.
The new 2025 release of IRRELIGIOUS POETRY is an album of eight songs that draws on all of Anthony’s experience as singer-songwriter, arranger, and performer. It features a host of outstanding musicians from this incredible grassroots London singer- songwriter scene.
Doors open 7.30pm. Music starts 8pm. The venue is mixed seated and standing. Tables are limited, and available on a first come first served basis, so if you’d like a seat, we recommend arriving early!
